So Bethany and Caitlin have this fairly long standing rivalry when it comes to predicting Rauscher baby genders (I'd like to know by the way, who is percentage wise more often correct? Can you guys remember back to when Abby was pregnant with David, or even before that when your mom was pregnant with Grace and Izzy, what you thought the baby would be - bor or girl?). This year Cait has chosen boy, and Beth has chosen girl (who picked first I wonder...?). Thus they have inspired me! I thought it might be interesting to try out some of the old wives tales and see how they measure up to the truth. Here are a few myths I have dug up:
•If you’re carrying in your hips, you’re having a girl. If you’re carrying in your belly, you’re having a boy.
•If the baby’s fetal heart rate is below 140 beats per minute, you’re having a boy. If the heart rate is more than 140 beats per minute, you’re having a girl.
•Take a ring (or a needle) and attach it to a thread. Lie down, and have someone hold the dangling ring over your belly. If the ring swings in a circular motion, you’re having a girl. If it moves in back and forth like a pendulum, you’re having a boy.
•Check out the Chinese birth calendar, which predicts the baby’s gender based on your age and the month your baby was conceived.
So in addition to predictions - Bethany, Caitlin - if anyone knows of any other baby predicting myths we can try out then post them and we'll just see who wins eternal glory and honor!!! Or who just happens to randomly guess correctly...

Ooooh, fun idea! I'll see if I can find any more "baby predicting myths."
Let's see... I can't remember for sure if I predicted what David would be. But if I remember correctly, I was right about Janna, Kahlayla, and Nathaniel. :-D (Bethany, did you always say something different than me or did we guess the same thing sometimes?)
I don't think I really predicted what Grace and Isaiah would be, but I do remember I really wanted a little sister when Mom was pregnant with G! And with Isaiah, we didn't want to find out what he was until he was born, but we got 3-D ultrasound pics and I thought his face really looked like a boy's, so I wasn't really surprised when he was born. But yeah, I don't think we had the whole official predicting business going on with G and I. :-D
I'm just sitting here with a goofy grin on my face because people are using the blog : ) Warms the cockles of my heart.
I have no idea what you are having. Traditionally if I predict one, it's the other, although there have been occasional babies that have ruined my abysmal record. Now with my own, I have possibly been right more often than wrong. I'll happily take a grandbaby of either gender -- or one of each : )
And if I think of any other fun predicting methods (besides the ones you've mentioned), I'll pipe up : )
Well, so far for the last heartbeat read we had at 10 wks it was 176 bpm, which is very girlie. So thats one for girl.
I was right with David, but I don't remember what I guessed with the others. And I picked girl first, of course!
I don't know why, but I feel like it's gonna be a girl.
But in the event that I'm wrong: Sorry about that, Son.
The Chinese birth calendar: "An ancient Chinese secret: This chart can be used to predict the sex of your unborn child. It has been said to be 99% accurate. The chart was buried in a tomb near Beijing for 700 years and now can be viewed at the Institute of Science in Beijing. To predict what sex your baby will be, locate the age the mother will be when she gives birth and the month the child was conceived." http://www.webwomb.com/chinesechart.htm
So according to this method we are having a boy, and an interesting fact to note would be that it was correct about Kahlayla being a girl. I would REALLY like to know if Abby and Mrs R could look at it and see how often it was right in predicting the gender of their babies (just for fun).
My mom and I looked at the predictions for me and my siblings and it only got 1 out of 4 right, so clearly not a flawless system!
Didja try the ring/needle and thread test yet?
we have, but we're trying to prolong the suspense =) after all we still have a whole month b4 we find out... if baby cooperates.Tim will post the results on the morrow!
Yay!
So the Chinese birth calendar accurately predicted the genders of me, Beth, Grace, Luke, and Isaiah. 5 out of 9 kids right = 55.5555%.
well it looks like the percentages are improving! (not by much)
Another predicting myth I have heard is that if you are having a girl you are more nauseaus than if you are having a boy. The reasoning being if you are having a girl its like you have a double dose of hormones. I think with Abby this was true? Wasn't she sick throughout her pregnancy with Janna?
I was pretty sick with Kahlayla and I would say I have been the same this time too, so girl I guess.
(Tim hasn't had time to post today, so we're just letting the suspense buuuuuuild)
Will you guys be finding out at 20 weeks?
Here's another one -- are you craving sweet or salty/sour things? Supposedly if you crave sweets, it's a girl, and if you crave non sweet things, that means it's a boy...
I actually took a quiz that asked that question, and now I wonder if every question was supposed to be an indicator, I will have to look back over it and do some research. Thanks Beth.
oh, and more like 18wks
The ring-string test has now been completed. We took Cassandra's wedding ring (the ring must be one of significance, of course, for the test to be truly accurate), and tied it to a piece of twine (for more solid results than thread can produce). Cassandra laid on the couch, I dangled the ring a few inches over her belly, holding it between the fingers of my right hand. The ring then started swinging.... in a circle! Cassandra accused me of moving my hand to make it swing in a circular motion (I was innocent), so I stopped the swinging with my free hand, and let it start again. This time, it started to swing.... in a circle!
So there you have it. According to the ring-string theory, which has yet to be disproven, we are having.... a girl.
For those of you reading and keeping score, so far here is where we are at:
-Heart rate: girl
-Hips/Belly: boy
-Chinese Calendar: boy
-Ring/String: girl
-Nausea: girl
Its a close race so far. It could still go either way, don't give up hope yet Caitlin.
Woohoo!
Sweet or salty? Definitely sweet! The girliness continues, although I have also wanted a lot of protein/red meat, which is a boy thing I thought?
So here's an interesting website, I believe its British and I was particularly interested in the fact that some of the myths were backwards from what we hear in the US - like the sweet and salty thing.
http://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/naming/knowing-gender-folklore/
The Drano method: This one involves taking Drano crystals and adding urine to them, and then judging by the resulting chemical reaction and color whether you are having a boy or girl. Its rumored to be pretty dangerous, so we're going to nix this one, but I thought I'd mention it at least.
The last of the myths I know of is called the "glowing or fading myth." It says the a woman pregnant with a little girl "fades" in beauty, her hair loses its fullness and shine. Meanwhile if she is having a little boy she "glows" - her conplexion clears up and her hair gains shine and manageability.
Well I may be getting chubby, BUT my hair and skin are easier to manage when I'm pregnant. So boy!
3 for boy
4 for girl
~whistles~ its close guys, really close.... With these ratios I'd say it could go either way!
Haha... I actually saw that Drano method, but I decided not to suggest it ;)
So do you already have an appointment made to find out Olga Lou or Bartholomew? When is it?
Wellllll, its in July... and I think we were going to wait and let it be a surprise =). But think the /end/ of July.
Yeah I mean maybe one day if Tim feels like playing mad scientist we might do the whole Drano thing, hah, but I highly doubt it.
you'll know before FB knows!
You mean you'll wait until she's born? That'll be fun!
Clarifying:
A. You ARE finding out which?
B. You AREN'T finding out which?
C. You are finding out but you are keeping all us extraneous family members in the dark?
D. Other. Could there BE an other?
E. None of the above! Apparently I made that really confusing, sorry, it was so clear in my head it just didn't transfer well... Anyway, we are finding out in July and we will tell you in July but for it to truly be a SURPRISE! we aren't going to tell you when :) one day you are just going to get a call.... And we won't put it on fb or anything b4 we tell family, reassurance, you'll know 1st
I was doing a search on fetal heartbeats, and I stumbled across a website (pregnancy. org, I believe) where someone had submitted the question of whether heart rate really indicated the baby's gender. The "expert" providing the answers said that no, this was just an old wives' tale and basically wasn't worth anything as a gender predicting method. The so-called expert then went on to talk about how dreams could tell you what you were having, either your own dreams or those of someone else, if they happen to dream about what the baby's gonna be.
Just thought it was a pretty ridiculous website.... "heart rate can't tell you what it is, but what do your dreams tell you?"
Btw, Mom, I'm pretty sure you must have meant "extended," not "extraneous."
LOL, nope, I meant extraneous : ) But it was tongue-in-cheek and I'm happy to read the implication that you don't think of us that way ; )
I have had no pregnancy dreams to date.
Wow. What a lot of activity here.
I thought I would pipe in with my experience. So, according to your chinese birth calendar thing, it was correct for David and Janna and incorrect for Nathaniel.
I threw up more when pregnant with David but I think I felt more nauseous with Janna due to not throwing up much. I honestly don't remember with Nathaniel--I was pretty tired and honestly don't remember as much with his pregnancy though it was only last year--sad, I know.
I think I carried all mine the same way. I suppose I craved fruit with David and sweets with Nathaniel and fast food with Janna but really I just mostly had food aversions with all of them more than cravings.
Well, there you have it. Those are my experiences with these. I never did the ring/string thing.
Thanks for the contribution Abby!
